The patron saint of intellectuals Jean-Paul Sartre declined the Nobel Prize in Lit because did not want to be “institutionalised”. His opinions would reflect on the Nobel & vice versa. 2) Sartre also had the decency to write to the Nobel committee asking for his name to be removed from consideration. His refusal was not an ex post free option.
Reminder: You do not become free by becoming prominent. You will be canceled if you stray from the monoculture. ACADEMIC “FREEDOM” The illusion held for so long by academics that one can be both free & on a salary is finally crashing. Worse, something J-P Sartre figured out: you cannot be both free & attached to an institution. Any institution. A truck driver is freer than any academic.
